Toward the end of the first group's contract,
which was for six months, it became evident that many of the men
intended to return home or join the Armed
Forces in Britain. An urgent plea to the unit members was made in an
attempt to encourage them to stay with
the NOFU and continue their work, which was becoming more and more
critical to the war effort as the conflict
escalated. A number of the men had joined the NOFU with the intention of
enlisting in the Armed Forces at the
end of their contract. Many members enlisted anyway, and a request was
made for an additional recruiting drive
in Newfoundland.
