Cliff, Inserted is a photo of Richard and Sadie Osmond
with the NOFU medal. Sadie was the daughter of Charles Short (Cape Ray)
who died in Scotland while serving with the forestry. She is 67 years old
now and can't remember her parents much because shortly after her father
died her mother passed away also. She was sent to an orphanage. I often
heard her tell of her fathers death and when I found your site I downloaded
the medal forms and gave them to her. She received the medal a few days
ago. I also showed her a photo of her fathers gravesite in Scotland that
you recently put on the NOFU site and hope someday to be able to show her
a photo of her father for her and her grandchildren. Hopefully someone
will someday find one and post it. She thanks you for helping her. If you
wish you can use the photo and info on your site.
Thank you Cliff,
Wayne Osmond, Cape Ray.

Sir,
I found it a bit interesting scanning through your write
up on the N.O.F.U. One thing I did notice there was some information short
on the ship Mendoza,I could supply a little because I was one of the many
Forestry Boys on that ship when she sailed. Myself and six others
left Conne on June 25th 1941 all named somewhere on this website, only
my address is wrong. I am from Conne not Morrisville as stated. though
there were I think four others from Morrisville they are also named.
Ralph Taylor was killed in Aviemore in a biking accident. I believe there
were 35 from St.Albans more from Milltown and others from around the bay,
We were under the charge of Leo Collier of St Albans, somewhere along the
way we were joined by many others from down St Anthony, Nippers Harbour
other places down the coast, others from Botwood, St Georges, We
all met in Montreal. The first night there was a bloody big racket teeth
and blood flying everywhere but for certain reasons before the night was
over we were lasting friends. Anyway after spending nine days in Montreal
sleeping on iron cots with no mattress just iron springs under us we did
not need anything to cover up because the heat was searing, We then joined
the Mendoza on the St Lawrence River and set sail for Liverpool a nineteen
days running out of drinking water just a small sip every night. We entered
Liverpool among half submerged sunken ships we landed among buildings all
blasted to hell from the bombing so on up to the safety of the highlands.

Hi Clifford,
I am finding the information on the N.O.F.U. very
interesting. You are doing an excellent job. I was looking at the
page about the people who died while serving in Scotland. I
see a Wm. R. Miller who was buried in Urray. My mother and father
and myself have tended this grave and if there is any relatives of
this man I would just like them to know that his grave is being looked
after. I believe he died of appendix. I don't
know how to give them this information, but maybe you can advise me how
to do it. I am not very good with computers.
Hope to hear from you soon

Dear Mr. Pike:
I just visited your website after reading about it in
The Newfoundland Kitchen. My grandfather Wallace William Colbourne
also served in this unit and spent many years in Scotland
after the war had ended, not returning to Newfoundland until 1969.
After the war had ended, my grandfather settled in the Fort William area,
opening his own business (timber extraction, and saw mill). He later
became a Corp Sargent Major in the Salvation Army Church. Are
you aware that many members of this unit are entitled to the Newfoundland
Volunteer Services Medal? I think this is the correct name, I
can't remember and would have to look at my files.
To apply you have to be either a surviving spouse, eldest surviving child,
or eldest surviving sibling. Since I could not
directly apply because I didn't meet the criteria, I had my grandfather's
brother apply. Once he received the medal he turned it over to me.
It's a very nice medal. The medal holds a great deal of meaning
for me as I never met my grandfather. If you are interested
in further information on this medal to put on your website, I am willing
to assist you in any way that I can.
Yours sincerely,

Hello Cliff,
Quite a surprise hearing from you, it's terrific
to know that someone out there remembers the boys of the Newfoundland Forestry
Unit. My husband was Louis A. Walsh of St. John's he was a scaler at Duthil
in Carrbridge, Inverness-shire. He was employed in the office of
Imperial Oil Ltd on Elizabeth Avenue from 1947- 1959 we were transferred
to Halifax, and then to Toronto before he died. I have five grown children
and 11 grandchildren. I would be honoured to have
you link to my page. I see that the Canadian government has recognized
the N.F.U. at long last. However, I have been fighting
for recognition by the U.K. government for the Women's Timber Corps. without
success so far. The Canadian Gvt would recognize us if we were recognized
by the U.K. Catch 22 !!! Some of the names that come
to mind are:- George Ireland, Ivan Shea, Jack Callahan, Tom Laracy(now
in Brantford, Ont) Lance May, J. Fifield, Jack Murphy,
Tom Power, my husband told me that they use to call their manager the "old
Prune" as he kept insisting that they all drink prune juice.
Can't remember his name though. Good
Luck with your WebPages, they are very well done.
Yours sincerely,
Rosalind

Hello Cliff,
I just found your web site and it looks great!
I have been doing some research on my Grandfather who was in the newfoundland
forestry unit, I havent been able to find much to go on and I was wondering
if you know of anywhere I can look. His Name was Robert Eliel Parsons
he was from Roberts arm , Green bay , central nf I would like to know about
the training before going to war and he told me he was a blacksmith in
scotland, but I dont know where and I would love to know. I saw a
horse shoe that he had but I dont know what ever happend to it. I am really
interested in finding some info because before my grandfather died he wanted
to tell everyone something and my grandmother just let it slide so I am
wondering if it has something to do with other kids or family from war
time. I have found publications on war time brides and postings on
the net from people who's fathers were from canada so there are such cases
as this. When I was a child he would tell me stories of men with dresses
I thougth that was the sillest thing. not ever knowing kilts were
a part of their culutre lol. I am trying to get a pic of my grandfather
that my aunt has it is from war time in scotland I will send it for you
page when I get it and find out the history of wher it was.
any questions or comments email me
thanks

My uncle (by marriage) Larry White; from Ferryland Newfoundland
was a member of the forestry unit. I remember he telling me stories of
his days in Scotland. Larry is dead now but I believe he still has 2 sisters
Mary Paul and Blanch White still living. I believe they are still living
in Ferryland.
Good Luck.

Hi Mr.Pike
A very good friend of mine was a member of that unit
during the time frame you mentioned. His name is Earl Parsons from Hare
Bay, Bonavista Bay, NF. He is or was one of the nicest persons I ever met.
I have not heard of him for 20 years but I think he is still with us.
All the best,
Gerry

I read your article regarding the overseas forestry
Unit, it was very informative. Thanks to it I have applied
for my deceased father's medal. I read that veterans
affairs have allocated funds to compensate all veterans including
members of the forestry unit. Are you aware of
any these funds being disbursed to the estates of the deceased veterans?
Any information regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

In reviewing your website I have a correction for one
of your readers. He is Gerald Pickett. He wrote you about an Earl Parsons
from Hare Bay.This man is deceased. He died about 5 years ago or somewhere
around there anyway. He was a very nice man. His wife Ida is originally
fromGooseberry Islands and she was a Wells. she is still living and is
living in St. John's with her daughter. Hope this is helpful.

Cliff,
I am Leslie's eldest son, Wayne. When I read Dad's
entry in your journal, I guess there was a part of Dad that I didn't know
about. It was extremely emotional to me and my family. Too
bad we didn't know about this before Dad passed away, January 27, 1998,
at the age 84, because it would have meant a great deal to him to have
read what he had felt and had written so many years ago. I am sending you
a scanned picture of Dad. This picture is what he would have looked
like, approximately around the time that he would have written this.
Anything else you would have, would greatly be appreciated. I am
also sending you a picture ofMom and Dad,approximately 20 years ago. Thank
you very, very much for bringing this to our attention, because Dad was
a very special person to each and everyone of us. It is great to
see what Dad's was feeling so long ago, when he was away from home and
in Scotland.
And again, I thank you very much for all you have done,
to bring this to us.
Wayne

Dear Cliff,
Read your letter in The Downhomer
with interest as my father was in the Forestry Unit as well. His name is
Tom Fitzpatrick from Torbay and now lives in Stephenville, Nfld. I spoke
with him today and he knew your father. He also remembered Leslie Pinhorn
however does not know where he wentafter. He does not remember Alphaeus
Pitcher. My dad was one of the last to leave Scotland because he had broken
his leg and spent some time in the hospital there recuperating. He did
mention that he thought Leslie Pinhorn had a brother as well in the Forestry
Unit. Anyway, I know this doesn't help you find who you're looking for
but thought you might be interested to hear of someone who knew your dad.
My father will be 85 years old next week and is in good health. Good luck
in your search. If you do have any news maybe you could send it to me and
I could relay it to my father.
Thanks..................Colleen Green

Hi again! I have just been going over your web site again,
and am more convinced than ever that George Nolan whom I mentioned earlier
was one of the group. His
wife Bella (nee Williamson) and her three daughters were
over in NFL a couple of years ago, I think that George was from the St.
Johns area? he also had a brother Bill who lived in Coldstream England
with his wife Margaret and family. I personally know Glady's Gilbert from
Newtonmore, remember her father and also Mr Hawco. Do you know anyone in
Kingussie?
