Are you looking for information about, or for someone who may have known, or worked with a NOFU member in Great Britain? We have had a few requests from individuals interested in knowing more about where their old friends or relatives  may be now, or where and how they spent their time overseas. If you have a particular request, email it to us and we will be pleased to add it to this page. Maybe somebody out there will remember and respond....

I am writing down my mother in law's memories and would be interested to hear from anyone ewho remembers either her or my husband's late father: Arthur Squires, 3406, Deshar Camp, Carrbridge 1941-45 and Euphemia Squires. They travelled back to St Phillips on the HMS Dottningholm in 1945.

My father Michael E Crawley (2115) and his brother Leonard (2207) both served in the Forestry Unit, Dad served in the Scottish Home Guard as well though I am having trouble finding proof of this. Do you know of others who had a similar problem? They had a brother John who served in the Royal Navy who disappeared after the war who has a son  who would love to hear any information from your association members if they have any.

As with most people I am also searching for information. I am trying to track down any information or anyone who knew my grandfather 'Wilmore (also known as Bill ) Howse" he was a member of the Forestry unit during the second World War and he settled in Cromarty in Scotland during the 1940's I believe.
Unfortunately Wilmore died in the early 1960's I believe and is now laid to rest in the town cemetary of Cromarty with his late wife ''Ethel Watson.'' As you can see I have a very sketchy knowledge of his life and only have one picture, so if anyone reading this knew him or knows someone he was friends with or has any pictures or even any recordings, as I know he was a keen singer I would be very grateful to them.  I am trying to piece together my grandfathers life for my father Kenneth Howse.

Dear Pike Family,
I have just been on the Web site and would like to say how much we enjoyed it. A really fantastic site and well done for keeping the memory of all that served.
I would like to ask for information through your Web site?

I am writing a book on a wartime unit formed in 1940. Auxiliary units were a cover name for a Nation-wide Resistance Organisation. Members initially recruited from people in reserved occupations, such as Farmers, Estate workers, Doctors/etc. Later in the war members were 'poached' from Home Guard units. The purpose of this organisation was to act as a Stay behind unit in the event of the UK being invaded. The Auxiliary Units covered the whole of the East coast of the UK. Scotland was a prime target for invasion. As some members of NOFU were in the Home Guard, it may be possible that they came across or were involved in some way with the Auxiliary Units in Scotland? These units constructed underground hides. Operational Bases, build by these units all over the East Coast of Scotland, men would live in them and conduct hit and run raids at night on road/rail convoys. Trained in Demolitions and silent killing and Reconnaissance, their life expectancy was about two weeks in theatre.
If you can be of any assistance any information no matter how trivial it may seem, will help in telling a story (a very interesting one at that) of people prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of there Country. Many thanks.

yours sincerely

John T Brushett was from Burin, Placentia Bay. He was a member of  the NOFU (No 2469) and was based in Cortachy, near Kirriemuir in 1941. He died as the result of a motor cycle accident on 7th August of that year. A photograph of his memorial stone in Kirriemuir has already been kindly submitted to this site.  Although in posession of some photograps taken at his funeral, we sadly do not possess a photograph of John himself - can anyone please help supply one. ...My father ( Tom Davis 2829 )  went overseas in 1939 to serve in the Forestry Unit during WW11 and did not return to Newfoundland until Sept.11th ,1950. I
remember the date because he often told me that he came back home on his 29th birthday.
On Canada Day in 1987 , my father passed away. After we laid him to rest , my mother  called all of our family together for a few moments and finally let us in a 40-45 year old secret. It seems that when my father was in Scotland , I do believe , he fathered a child . The child's name was Elaine... possible birthdate was February 6th. between 1940 and 1950...

My name is Tessa Hoffe and I was informed of your website dedicated to the New Foundland Overseas Forestry Unit in Scotland. I have been
looking over and have been facinated by the stories and pictures provided on the site.
My Grandfather, Titus Hoffe was one of the men in this group. Unfortunately I never met my grandfather as he was killed in a car accident in Scotland in 1951.
I have very little information and I don't have any photos of him. I was wondering at all if it was possible if you could let me know how to contact your members to see if anyone remembers him or has any information about him.
I would be most grateful.

He was actively involved in the Confederation with Canada movement and after Confederation worked the Department of Fisheries and with the Tourist Development Board. for St.John's, NFLD, I know that he got shot in the war but I don't know anything else.
Also my other grandfather served in the NOFU as well, he lied about his age so he could join, His name was Alexander Baker of St. John's, He was a big
man 6ft tall and build like an ox, he always said he met the queen and taught her how to drive a forkclift, how true that was I have no idea, but
if anyone has information on either man I would appreciate it very much.

My father left Sunnyside in Trinity Bay to go to Bishop's Falls and from there he wnt to Scotland with the NOFU around 1939/40. He was I believe up around the Fort
William area for a while. He would have been 20/21 years old at the time. He later decided to join the British Army and served in the Pioneer Coprs and when sent overseas
was stationed mostly in Egypt, reaching rank of seargent. If any one can shed any light on his time in Scotland or Egypt I would be grateful.

However, he left in 1939 on the Scythia. I think he ended up in the New Forest in the south of England as he later joined the Hampshire Regiment before transferring to the 59th. She thinks he was in Scotland. Who is right?

Inserted is a photo of Richard and Sadie Osmond with the NOFU medal. Sadie was the daughter of Charles Short (Cape Ray) who died in Scotland while serving with the forestry. She is 67 years old now and can't remember her parents much because shortly after her father died her mother passed away also. She was sent to an orphanage. I often heard her tell of her
father's death and when I found your site I downloaded the medal forms and gave them to her. She received the medal a few days ago. I also showed her a photo of her father's gravesite in scotland that you recently put on the NOFU site and hope someday to be able to show her a photo of her father for her and her grandchildren. Hopefully someone will someday find one and post it. She thanks you for helping her. If you wish you can use the photo and info on your site.

He died on May 19,1943 and is  buried at Carrbridge in Scotland. I have been looking for info on him for a while and was lucky to find this page.  Is there anywhere else i should look for information?  I was told that there was a book written "they fought too" but from looking at your page i would say its "they also served" and was just mixed up in the translation.  Supposedly in this book there is an account of my grandfathers death so I would really like to read it.
