The following poem was written to his mother back in Newfoundland
by Nathan James Spencer (2602)
of Harbour Breton, and provided to the site by his daughter Christine
Buffett.
.
.
"......It will be a great
tribute to
him and I appreciate it
very much! I think he put his whole heart and soul
into the poem at that lonesome
time in his life and a deep longing for home." (Christine Buffett)
.
Here it is:
.
Dear Mother and All at
Hr.Breton
.
I received your letters
Mother,
And was more than glad
to hear
That everyone was well
at home,
And happy over there
I also got my parcels
And the snapshots that
you sent
I have them all enlarged
now
They are hanging o'er my
head
.
And every time I look at
them,
I think of when you said:
Goodbye my son,God bless
you
Until we meet again
I know that He'll take
care of you
So put your trust in him
And Mother dear that's
what I do
And will until the end
.
Now Mother dear, I've been
over here
For sixteen months and
more
And it's only God above
who knows
For just how many more
But all the boys from home
are well
And send their love to
all
At dear old HR.Breton
And say they'll see you
all next fall
.
Please give my love to
Father
Brother Jack and Gertie
too
And tell them that I love
them all
And Mother I love you
I dream of you at night
time
And think of you all day
But to close this little
note of mine
This is all that I will
say
.
I'll fight for victory
till the end
But when this war is o'er
I'll see your faces once
again
And my dear old Native
shore
For Hitler then ,sure he'll
be gone
And his Devils put away
And the whole world will
know peace again
Oh,What a Happy Day
.
