    Hand or Machine Washing

If you have an oriental rug, treat it carefully. Its dyes may not be colour-fast and it may shrink or dry unevenly. It should only be cleaned by an expert. Machine washing is usually satisfactory for newer rugs. If your rug is an heirloom, we will advise you whether you should opt for handwashing, which is roughly twice as expensive, but might be necessary to preserve the carpet.

Oriental rug washing (wool):
- shampooing (wet and dry)
- hand finishing

Obviously silk rugs require the greatest care. Bring yours to our store and we will discuss what needs to be done with you in person.

Oriental rug cleaning (silk):
- our traditional family process includes: cleaning, protein renewal and hand finishing

• We can repair almost anything that has gone wrong with your rug. Where we differ from many rug restorers is that we will take the time to discuss with you your options and we honestly advise clients on the pros and cons of repairing their old rugs comparing with purchasing new ones.

Repairs include:

Plugging: if there is a small hole in the rug it can be repaired without reweaving by inserting a plug of a similarly coloured silk/wool
Lock stitching: undertaken on existing damage to prevent further deterioration of the rug

Fringes: machine-made fringes can be prepared in order to preserve rug ends

• Some carpets deserve more than repair and their owners want them restored to their original state. This is a more expensive service, but often worth the cost. This might involve:

Re-weaving of damaged areas
Re-construction of warps and wefts to facilitate re-weaving
Re-construction of ends, including selvage and fringe (constructed from scratch so as to match)
Re-construction of sides, including overcastting
Stretching and sizing

Preservation

• Sometime you have a damaged rug that you simply don't want to get any worse.

All stop-off stitching to prevent further damage and keep the rug in its present state
Area-specific stitching (to be removed) to facilitate cleaning without further damage

Wall Mounting

• Fine or delicate rugs are sometimes best enjoyed on walls. A hand-stitched wall mount is by far the best means to hang your rug without any long term damage to its structure.

Appraisal Service

• You might want an appraisal of your rug for any number of purposes. That appraisal can be more or less formal and detailed, all the way from a simple verbal statement to a very detailed technical description. The cost will vary accordingly.

Type 1 – A statement of identification which will identify a rug as to: type (style), country of origin, size, material composition, value

Type 2 – A complete constructional analysis including: country of origin, type (style), type of knot, number of plies, pile type, type of spinning such as Z spun or S spun, type of warp that is number of strands and spin, type of weft, number of strands and spin, type of dyes, dimensions, photo, official certificate, present replacement value. This will be signed, dated, and authenticated with our with corporate seal.

Lectures

For Beginners

• Lectures are offered to beginners with a limited background on rugs. A general introduction to oriental rugs will be given in order to provide individuals with a basic working knowledge that will assist them in purchasing oriental rugs for their homes. Lectures will overview the following topics: developing the ability to identify new pieces from different areas; how to identify hand-made pieces from machine-made copies; how to distinguish woven pieces from tufted pieces; and also how to recognize differences in materials, such as cotton from wool, and real silk from art silk (rayon and mercerized cotton).

Advanced

• More in-depth lectures are also provided for those who already have a good background on oriental rugs in order to expand their knowledge on the subject. These discussions are broken down into individual subjects that include such topics as: dating, identification, history, art, geography, styles and detail.

• Whether you are thinking about buying a rug or just what to learn more about the most beautiful of the useful arts, find out more about these intriguing weavings.
